Folders you create from Docs are stored on Google Drive next to your other folders.

To create a new Google Docs folder on your Windows, Mac, Linux, or Chromebook computer, open a web browser on your computer and open Google Docs.

On the Documents Web site, select the document that you want to place in the new folder. If you don’t have a document yet, click “Empty” to create one.

At the top of the document editing screen, next to the document name, click “Move” (folder icon).

You’ll see your Google Drive folders in the move menu that opens. Here, navigate to the folder where you want to create a new folder. Then click “New Folder” in the lower left corner of this menu.

Delete files and folders on Microsoft OneDrive

When you run out of storage space or just need to do some cleaning, you can delete files and folders that are no longer needed in Microsoft OneDrive. Here’s what you need to know.

What happens when you delete files and folders on OneDrive?

You can sync multiple devices with your OneDrive account, allowing you to access files and folders stored in the cloud from any of them. Whenever you upload a new file or folder from one device to OneDrive, you can access it from all your synced devices.

Similarly, if you delete a file or folder from OneDrive, you will not be able to access it from any of your devices. This is because even if you access the file from multiple devices, the file itself is in the cloud.

The exception is that if you sync your phone’s photo album with OneDrive and then delete the picture from the album in your OneDrive account, the picture stored on your phone won’t be affected.

In other words, if you upload your photos to OneDrive, you’ll have two copies of that photo instead of one: one on your phone and one in the cloud.

Delete files and folders on OneDrive

You can delete files and folders in OneDrive from your computer or smartphone. Here’s how to do both.

Delete files and folders using your computer

To delete files and folders from OneDrive, open a browser on your computer, go to the OneDrive website, and sign in to your account.

Once you’ve signed in, you’ll be on the “My Files” tab in your account. Here, select the file or folder you want to delete by clicking on it. You can select multiple files and folders by holding down the Ctrl key (Command on a Mac) and clicking on files/folders. The selected files and folders appear in a gray box with a blue checkmark in the upper right corner.

Once a file or folder is selected, “Delete” will appear in the menu bar. Click it to delete the selected files and folders.

You can also delete a file or folder stored on OneDrive from your computer. Click the OneDrive icon on the desktop toolbar, then click “Open Folder” to quickly open the OneDrive folder in File Explorer.

In the OneDrive folder in File Explorer, select the file or folder that you want to delete, and then press Delete. You can also right-click on a file or folder and then click “Delete” from the context menu.

Delete files and folders using your smartphone

To delete OneDrive files and folders using your mobile device, you need to download the OneDrive app for iOS or Android. After installation, click the application icon to launch it.

When your application opens, you will be on the home screen. If you know the name of the file or folder you want to delete, click the search bar at the top and enter the name of the file or folder.

Your recent files will also appear on the home screen. If the file you want to delete does not exist, click “Show All” to the right of Recent Files.

When you find the file or folder you want to delete, click the three dots to the right of the file or folder name.

In the window that appears, click ‘Delete’.

A pop-up menu will appear asking you to confirm that you want to delete the item. Click the “Delete” button again.

The file or folder is now deleted.

Empty the basket

When something is deleted, whether it’s deleted from OneDrive, a OneDrive folder on your computer, or a mobile app, it will be moved to the Trash. You want to empty the trash to permanently delete everything.

Empty the basket using the computer

To empty the Recycle Bin from your computer, return to the OneDrive website and click “Recycle Bin” in the left pane.

Then click on the item you want to permanently delete. Or click the balloon next to “Name” at the top of the list and quickly select all the items in the Trash.

Once selected, the option to delete the selected items appears in the header menu. This option will tell you to “Empty Trash” if you have selected all the items in the Trash. Otherwise, “Delete” will be displayed.

A message appears asking you to confirm that you really want to delete all items. If you are sure, click “Yes”.

Warning: You cannot restore files or folders after emptying the Recycle Bin. Only empty the Recycle Bin if you are sure you no longer need the files or folders.

Files and folders are now permanently deleted from OneDrive.

Empty the bin using your smartphone

To empty the Recycle Bin using your smartphone, open the app and tap “Files” at the bottom of the screen.

Then tap “Trash” in the lower right corner of the screen.

To select an item from the Trash to delete, press and hold the item with your finger. A blue balloon appears next to it, indicating that an item is selected. Click the bell next to select more items. To delete selected items, tap the trash can icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

A pop-up message appears asking you to confirm that you want to permanently delete the selected items from OneDrive. Click ‘Delete’.

Warning: Items removed from the Trash cannot be recovered. Before deleting a file or folder, make sure you no longer need it.

Selected files and folders are now permanently deleted from OneDrive.

It is recommended that you back up your files to multiple locations. It is said that if your data is not backed up in three different places, it does not exist. This means that there are some privacy issues when storing files in the cloud. If you are concerned, you can deactivate and remove OneDrive from File Explorer.
